Newbury wrote it in the 1960s while under contract to Acuff-Rose Music in Nashville, and although it climbed the pop charts with Andy Williams in 1968, his “An American Trilogy” and “Just Dropped In (to See What Condition My Condition Was In)” are better known. Willie Nelson, too, recorded “Sweet Memories” in 1968 during his lost years at RCA Victor, but the first version to hit the country charts came in the voice of duet partners Don Gibson and Dottie West in 1969. Obviously, John and Rosanne are avoiding the predictable songs, opting to delve deeper into the country music catalog when it’s more likely that her father had picked a better-known song for his list.
