The instant you push off for your run, the vacuum gets turned on. You get sucked down the fall line. That string (gravity) wants to pull you down the hill. Don't fight it! If you get out of the fall line or hold a turn too long, that string will get stressed out and torque you off balance. Don't let that happenembrace gravity and ski the fall line. Page 35 35 A flashlight in your belly button As you ski down the hill, you want to keep your upper body facing down the fall line. Think of your belly button as a flashlight that you must keep pointed directly down the hill.
Lets see what happens when we put these scales on our skis. 27 Weighting and unweighting The essential secret to maneuvering your skis back and forth across the fall line is the ability to weight and unweight your skis. By weighting your skis you push the camber out of them, and even reverse it. This causes the skis to bow under your feet and this shape lends itself to a turn. When you unweight the ski you are in a sense lifting it up off the snow. In this instant of zero-gravity, it's easy to change the direction of the ski, switch leads, and shift your balance to the other set of edges.
Wait until you are pointing downhill, then sink down into the turn and compress and edge those skis out of the fall line. When you complete the turn by coming across the fall line, simply stand back up in your athletic stance, and let the skis start back into the fall line. As you get more comfortable with this, you can transition faster and edge your skis into the fall line just like in the previous tip. Page 14 13 Tele-circle This is another good drill to practice. Pick a comfortable slope for yourself and get into a tele-stance with your downhill (inside) leg back, and the uphill (outside) leg forward (just like it would be if you were initiating a turn).
