Domain Naming Master controls the addition or removal of any new domains in a forest. There are three other FSMO roles that are unique to a single domain. So if you have a single domain forest, you’ll have a total of five FSMO roles: one of each forest-wide FSMO role, and one of each domain-wide role. But if you have a forest that contains two domains, you’ll have eight FSMO roles: one of each forest-wide FSMO, and two of each domain-wide role. 0 backup domain controllers and processes password changes for any non-AD-aware clients.

You can see that it involves some pretty high overhead to process an iterative query, which is why they’re used almost exclusively by DNS servers. 44 CHAPTER 2 ■ INTEGRATING THE NETWORK INFRASTRUCTURE DNS clients (resolvers), on the other hand, will use recursive queries. A recursive query is basically looking for a “yes” or “no” answer. A client will ask its DNS server if it knows where a particular machine is. The DNS server either knows the answer and sends the client to the right place, or it doesn’t know and returns some sort of “could not find host” error.

18 CHAPTER 1 ■ INSTALLING ACTIVE DIRECTORY Placing Global Catalog Servers Global Catalog servers are a special designation for domain controllers: Global Catalogs (GCs) not only store a full copy of the Active Directory data for their own domain, but also a partial replica of the domain data for all other domains in the forest. This allows applications to query any domain controller in a forest for Active Directory information from any domain. Global Catalogs are also where Universal group memberships are stored, which means that any user trying to log on to Active Directory needs to be able to access a Global Catalog server.
