No sane human being lives shut off from esthetic experience of some kind. But not all sane human beings develop taste beyond a certain point—taste in any art or medium. The impediments here are mostly social, but often they are temperamental or owed to circumstances of upbringing that have nothing to do with social or economic factors. Yet, whatever their origin, these impediments do tend to make themselves felt as natively personal (like many other things actually owed to circumstance). " Now it's precisely the subjective that, more than anything else immediate, gets in the way of the distancing that is essential to esthetic experience.

In transcending the privately personal, art and taste don't separate themselves thereby from "life," from the rest of experience, that is non-esthetic experience. To keep on expanding and refining your taste, in no matter what direction, does ask—as it seems to me—that you keep on expanding and refining your sense of life in general. There are what look like ever so many contradictions of this thesis: geniuses at a loss in the day-to-day, persons of precocious sensibility in this or that art who lack anything resembling wisdom, esthetes in general, and so on.

If 8 / Homemade Esthetics this were kept better in mind, there might be less rancor in disputes about art. " It's not necessary here to go into the reasons he gave for saying this. I'd rather go into the reasons my own experience offers for agreeing with him. I would say that the very involuntariness of the intuition that is the esthetic judgment does not so much precede the "pleasure" as enable you to commit yourself to it. That the judgment is received instead of taken makes it felt as a necessary one, and its necessity frees and surrenders you to the commitment.
